This freezes your subject immediately, but if there’s motion in the frame, you’ll often see light trails in front of the subject, which can look unnatural. The rear-curtain flash fires at the very end of the exposure, just before the shutter closes. This allows any motion blur to build up naturally during the exposure, and the flash “freezes” the subject at the end, so light trails appear behind the subject, creating a more dynamic, natural sense of movement.
